Prevent and British Values

In 2015 the government released its Counter Terrorism policy, CONTEST. Its aim is to reduce the risk to the UK and its interests overseas from terrorism so that people can go about their lives freely and with confidence. This means challenging extremist ideas that are also part of a terrorist ideology.

PREVENT is one of the four strands of the CONTEST strategy along with PERSUE, PROTECT and PRESERVE. The PREVENT strand is the responsibility of the education system, criminal justice system, charities, online platforms and the NHS. FW Solutions, as a Training Provider, is included in this group of responsible organisations and we have a duty to protect our learners and stakeholders under the strategy.

Fundamental British Values form part of PREVENT and have been developed by the UK Government. They were designed to balance freedom of thought, expression and choice in a liberal society with the need to maintain a safe and secure society and promote social unity and prevent extremism.

The four British Values are:

  • Democracy: This is implemented through our students having an open platform to talk and ask questions. Students are encouraged to air their opinions and views to support healthy discussion.
  • The rule of law: This is implemented within our policies, procedures and quality cycle to ensure a high standard of teaching, learning and assessment. We also teach our learners about key legislations and regulations relating to the sectors we deliver in.
  • Individual liberty: Our learners are respected for their diversity and individual needs. A strong SEND policy and SEND Coordinator is in place to support our learners and ensure we have an inclusive atmosphere of learning, taking into account learning styles and individual circumstances.
  • Mutual respect for and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs and for those without faith: At FW Solutions we pride ourselves in the diversity of our learners and aim to support all needs that may arise. This encourages and supports an inclusive approach.

A key part of our plan for education is to ensure children become valuable and fully rounded members of society who treat others with respect and tolerance, regardless of background.”

FW Solutions supports the Government’s plan for education through teaching cultural topics and allowing learners to research into the diversity of the UK. This is implemented holistically across all apprenticeship and adult learning programmes by ensuring the Fundamental British Values are embedded in all areas of learning. FW Solutions is committed to protecting freedom of speech within its education institution.

The Prevent Duty and cultural topics will continue to be taught as part of our teaching strategy, focusing on preventing vulnerable learners and stakeholders being drawn into terrorism and the Fundamental British Values that are pivotal to life in Modern Britain.

As stated in our Safeguarding strategy, all staff have been trained on how to recognise the signs of radicalisation and how to raise concerns following Prevent guidance.
