Specification

This ProQual qualification is aimed at all practitioners working in the childcare workforce at Level 3, such as childminders, nursery practitioners, preschool practitioners, out of school/holiday provision workers. It allows learners the opportunity to develop the required skill levels to undertake a management role and support the high standards of childcare practice within the workplace.

Entry Requirements

Candidates are expected to be working in the childcare sector in a practitioner role and hold a relevant Level 3 qualification. Initial assessments of skills and knowledge will help to identify any gaps and assist in planning the assessment strategy for completion of this qualification.

The qualification is not eligible for apprenticeship funding and is a standalone qualification (therefore there are no functional skills tests). The cost of the course can be self-funded by you or your organisation.

The Diploma is also eligible for the Advanced Learning Loan scheme which is administered by the Student Loans Company. You can use this to pay for part or all of the Diploma. Please visit our Advanced Learner Loan page for more information.

Method of Assessment

Qualifications are delivered in the workplace. You will be allocated a personal Teaching and Learning Co-ordinator and will be given access to our on-line study area where you will find all your learning materials. Your Teaching and Learning Co-ordinator will provide you with personal tutorial support and assessment at pre-arranged times. Assessment is through a variety of methods including observations in the workplace, witness testimonies, product evidence, professional discussions, assignments and project/case studies. All evidence will be logged to your electronic portfolio of evidence.

The qualification provides practitioners with the opportunity to upskill, and develop management skills so that they can take on new roles and responsibilities. Candidates must complete all of the 8 mandatory units plus a minimum of one optional unit.

Unit 1 – Study skills Level 3
Unit 2 – Legal requirements/Legislation in childcare Level 4
Unit 3 – Understanding child development and how children learn Level 4
Unit 4 – Support programmes that promote children’s development Level 4
Unit 5 – Longitudinal studies Level 4
Unit 6 – Leadership, management and supervision Level 4
Unit 7- Working in partnership Level 4
Unit 8 – Reflecting, reviewing and evaluating own practise Level 4

Optional units

Unit 9 – Working with babies 0-18 months Level 4
Unit 10 – Play for out of school/holiday provision Level 4
Unit 11 – Care of two year olds Level 4
Unit 12 – Carrying out a research project Level 4

Progression Routes

Learners who successfully achieve this level 4 qualification may go on to study at level 5 or undertake a foundation degree in childcare studies.
